• On March 22, 1985, countries that belonged to the United Nations agreed to pass the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. The agreement became official in 1988.

The ozone layer is an invisible shield found high in the Earth’s atmosphere. The ozone layer protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) depletes the ozone layer. Throughout the 20th century, CFCs were often used in refrigerators and aerosol cans. Most products now use alternatives to CFCs in order to protect the ozone layer.
