• On August 22, 1864, the International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization was formed by diplomats at the first Geneva Convention, concerned with improving the treatment of wounded soldiers during wars. The mission of the Red Cross is “ . . . to protect the lives and dignity" of victims of armed conflict"conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.”

    The International Committee of the Red Cross has received three Nobel Peace Prizes, an unmatched feat". It is the leading agency" in the Red Cross Movement, which includes national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
