Geography education is critical to the success of today’s young people and our nation’s future. Efforts that you make to let Congress know that you value high-quality geography instruction in K-12 classrooms will make a difference.
Here’s what you can do to help:
- Join the public campaign in support of the Teaching Geography is Fundamental Act (TGIF) at SpeakUpForGeography.org. In just a few minutes, you can send digital letters to your Legislators in Congress asking for their co-sponsorship of TGIF. TGIF will fund research and innovation in professional development to help ensure that all young people acquire the vital geography skills and experience they need.
- Meet directly with your Legislators to let them know K-12 geography education is valued by their constituents. Find tips for scheduling meetings and resources for Congressional meetings here.
- Get involved with your state geography education Alliance. National Geographic’s Network of Alliances for Geographic Education is a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting geographic education. Alliances are partnerships between university faculty and K-12 educators. These state-based organizations connect educators, provide world-class professional development, and promote educational innovation at the state and local levels. Since 1986, National Geographic and the Network of Alliances have worked to catalyze “geo-education” reform across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
