An arctic convoy of tractor trains hauls equipment to polar outposts in Greenland. The Greenland ice sheet is about 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) long and 1,100 kilometers (680 miles) wide, the second-largest body of ice in the world. The Antarctic ice sheet is many times larger. Together, the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets contain 99 percent of freshwater ice on Earth.
