Program God Grew Tired of Us

  • The Lost Boys of Sudan are a group of Dinka youth who fled civil war in their native country, spent a decade growing up in a Kenyan refugee camp, and were eventually resettled in the United States. The Dinka are the largest ethnic group in southern Sudan. In the United States, the Lost Boys faced many challenges while adapting to their new lives and trying to maintain their cultural identities as Dinka.

    1. Why does John Dau continue to eat African food with his hands while living in America?

He wants to stay connected to his native culture. It allows him to “look more Dinka” and “look more African.”

    2. Why did Daniel start “Little Parliament” while in the Kakuma Refugee Camp?

Daniel wanted to give people a chance to talk, to come together like a family, and forget about war.

    3. Why is John Dau worried about the younger Lost Boys living in America?

The younger Lost Boys have lost touch with Sudanese culture more than other members of the group. They have adopted more American customs.

    4. Why do you think the younger Lost Boys living in America are more at risk for losing their Sudanese culture?

A much greater portion of their lives has been spent in the United States, and they have fewer memories of living in Sudan than the other members of the group
