Program God Grew Tired of Us

  • The documentary "God Grew Tired of Us" tells the story of the Lost Boys of Sudan. The Lost Boys of Sudan are a group of Dinka youth who fled civil war in their native country, spent a decade growing up in a Kenyan refugee camp, and were eventually resettled in the United States. The Dinka are the largest ethnic group in southern Sudan. In the United States, the Lost Boys faced many challenges while adapting to their new lives and trying to maintain their cultural identities as Dinka.

    1. Why did John Dau decide not to go to college in America?

      He felt that he needed to work full time in order to support his family members still living in Sudan and friends still in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. He wanted to change their situation by sending money to them.

    2. How does John Dau believe that each person should use his unique, individual talents?

      He believes that an individual should use his or her unique talents in service to the community.

    3. Do you think that John Dau's responsibilities have increased or decreased since he immigrated to the United States? Why?

      His responsibilities have increased. He now has to work to support himself and his family and friends in Sudan and Kenya. He also takes on a new, self-appointed role in America, as an ambassador for Sudan
